DESCRIPTION:Späti talk and Kiez tour in Kreuzberg (English)Berlin?s urban lan
dscape is changing rapidly: rising rents\, displacement\, and the transfor
mation of established neighborhoods disproportionately affect people with
a migration background\, and shape who gets to feel at home in the city. B
ut what does research tell us? How are gentrification\, cultural diversity
\, and social inequality connected ? and what perspectives can social scie
nce offer for a more equitable urban development? These are the questions a
t the heart of the third and final event on June 11\, 2026\, in the series
?WZB in Your Kiez: Social Sciences Meet Urban Culture in Berlin?. The eve
ning begins with a talk at a neighborhood Späti near Kottbusser Tor by WZB-r
esearcher Sarah George. Neighborhoods are more than just places to live\,
they can provide support and connection\, but they can also reinforce disa
dvantage and separation. Sarah?s talk looks at where refugees settle in Ge
rmany\, why these patterns emerge\, and what ethnic segregation can mean i
n practice ? from the potential benefits of neighborhood concentration and
community ties to the risks of deepening inequality and exclusion.Followi
ng the talk\, a guided tour of Kreuzberg will be led by Muhammed Lamin Jad
 ama ? political activist\, photographer\, street worker\, neighborhood exp
ert\, and tour guide with Querstadtein e.V.. The tour explores how the dru
g situation in Görlitzer Park connects to the European asylum system\, what i
t means to live without a residence permit\, and how local initiatives bri
ng people with and without a migration background together to shape life i
n the Kiez.Together\, we will discuss how gentrification and migration sha
pe the lives and culture of people in Berlin\, where displacement and excl
usion begin\, and what possibilities for a diverse\, equitable city are co
nceivable. We look forward to a lively exchange! The ?WZB in Your Kiez? eve
nt series consists of three events in May and June and is open to anyone i
nterested. The event language is English. The goal of the series is to con
nect research on social inequality with everyday urban culture in Berlin a
nd to make topics such as migration\, gentrification\, and social particip
ation accessible in a low-threshold\, local format.Lara Bister and Emily F
rank\, researchers in the Health and Social Inequality research group at t
he WZB\, received the ?WZB Wirkt? transfer grant from the Freunde des WZB
