Die Bilder zeigen gepflegte Fassaden\, penibel gemähte Rasenflächen\, große Autos\, Liebe zum Detail. Eine Repräsentation des Lebensg efu?hls\, des Status. Doch es sind auch stecken gebliebene Bauvorhaben zu sehen\, eine Brache mit wild wucherndem Oleander oder ein zum Verkauf steh endes Haus mit entsprechendem Schild im vertrockneten Vorgarten. Zum Zeitp unkt der Aufnahmen wussten nur wenige von der sich in vollem Gange befindl ichen Immobilienblase\, die bereits ein halbes Jahr später platzen sollte. D ie Auswirkungen waren bekanntermaßen immens. It illustrates h ow the continued hegemony of unleashed finance\, combined with technologic al innovation and the elimination of human reason\, empathy and ethics\, p erpetuates the unacceptable distribution of power in favor of a super-rich minority in our globalised capitalist system. At the time of t he shoot\, few knew about the real estate bubble that was under way and wa s to burst just half a year later. The effects were to be immense\, as we know now. They had a lasting impact on the financial markets and thus abov e all on the livelihoods of many\, not only in the US.Looking at these pic tures today\, they do not only point to the pretty fiction of American sub urbia. They are also reminiscent of the global financial crisis of the 200 0s and thus emblematic for a social system that has surrendered to unleash ed financial markets.//Mark Curran is an activist researcher and educator based in Berlin and Dublin. Incorporating multi-media installation\, centr ally informed by visual anthropology\, he has undertaken a cycle of long-t erm projects critically addressing the predatory impact of migrations of g lobal capital.
