DESCRIPTION:SomoS is pleased to present 'Symbiotic Lens\,' a solo exhibitio
n featuring California-based Chinese-American artist and scientist Qinqin
Liu's mixed media works created during her residency in Berlin. Liu's inte
rdisciplinary approach combines her PhD in botany and ecology with her art
istic practice\, drawing on research in climate science\, indigenous ecolo
gy\, and her personal history as a village artist during China's Cultural
Revolution. This diverse background allows her to make innovative and thou
ght-provoking connections between art\, science\, and culture. Opening rec
 eption: Tuesday\, October 22\, 2024\, 6:00-9:00 p.m. Exhibition dates: Oct
ober 23-26. October 2024 Free entry Location: SomoS - Kottbusser Damm 95\,
  1.0G\, 10967 Berlin Public transport: U8 - Schönleinstraße Coming from a fami
ly of textile producers\, Liu's sensual and experimental work embraces fib
res\, natural materials and the tactile interplay of colour and texture. H
er collaged 'tapestries' integrate recycled urban materials with samples f
rom Berlin's natural environment\, reinterpreting Humboldt and Heckel's ex
plorations of the 'exotic'. It is the poetic and emotional depth of Liu's
work that is most strongly expressed\, however\, as she seeks to connect '
art\, culture and nature with the human mind\, heart and soul' in response
to the fragility of the environment. By drawing parallels between the mic
ro and macrocosmic\, Liu's work reveals a cosmic worldview in which everyt
hing is interconnected\, urging us to feel the urgency of the global envir
onmental crisis on a profound\, visceral level. About Qinqin Liu: Qinqin L
iu\, Ph.D.\, is an interdisciplinary artist and scientist whose work combi
nes her background in botany and ecology with contemporary art. Trained at
the University of California\, Davis and Berkeley and the School of Visua
l Arts in New York\, Liu's artistic practice bridges Eastern and Western t
raditions\, combining Chinese calligraphy and ink painting with Western ab
straction. Her art is grounded in scientific research on biodiversity and
climate risks and explores the fragile balance between humans and nature.
Working in media such as ink\, watercolor\, and collage\, she incorporates
organic materials\, including rice paper and found objects\, to create wo
rks that reflect the emotional and ecological consequences of environmenta
l change.Liu's art has been exhibited at prestigious institutions includin
g the Crocker Art Museum and California State University\, and she has par
ticipated in numerous international residencies. Through her experimental
approach\, Liu challenges viewers to rethink their connection to nature in
a time of environmental crisis. Opening hours: Tue-Sat 2-7pm\n\nViel Spas
