DESCRIPTION:12.-22.2.2025 Päivikki Kallio - Citylights Vernissage: Tue 11.2.
 7-9 pm*** Opening hours: Tuesday-Saturday 3-7 pmGalerie Pleiku Eugen-Schönhaa
r-Strasse 6a 10407 Berlin *** The background of the installation Citylight
s/Lost City\, 2023 is based on a phenomenon that I noticed by chance years
ago. I wanted to create a thin beam of light and installed an aluminum pl
ate (gobo) in the spotlight with only a small pinhole in the middle. The r
esult was unexpected - not a beam of light\, but a pinhole camera image fr
om inside the spotlight became visible on the wall. This phenomenon is use
d in the design of the wall made of punch cards. Originally\, the results
of scientific experiments were encoded on these punch cards. In the instal
lation Citylights\, however\, the holes are interpreted differently with l
ight. The punch cards act like a pinhole camera\, the spotlights show not
only the rectangular holes but also the round projections of the spotlight
s on the wall. The punch card acts like a musical score\, reminiscent of p
unch tapes for mechanical pianos\, for example. In the installation\, the
light sources interpret a 'composition' that can be imagined as a new way
of recording a scientific process. ?Although the exhibition focuses on the
past and contains elements of longing\, the overall picture is 'reflectiv
e nostalgia'*. The punch cards serve as an example of historical awareness
\, a return to the roots that are still tangible and understandable\, but
on which this strange world of multiple algorithms is nevertheless based.
On an individual level\, repeating and turning time permeates everything\,
which I believe lies at the core of art itself. *** The background of the
