SomoS is pleased to present “Memorial Bodies,” a solo exhibition by German-Canadian visual artist Gabriela Hirt. This captivating presentation pushes traditional artistic boundaries by weaving together movement, poetry, visual art and the theme of the long-term impact of colonial legacy. Hirt's innovative expanded painting approach dismantles the proverbial fourth wall and invites an immersive experience that explores trauma, tension and the resulting barriers to human/intimate relationships.
Through dynamic collaborations, including performances by Berlin dancers Marie Elise Hufnagel and Tabea Antonacci and poetry by Wiradjuri author Alison J. Barton, Hirt's work navigates the complexities of identity, memory and social division. “Memory Body” confronts the viewer with the legacies of history and encourages them to take a reflective journey into the depths of collective and individual consciousness. Hirt explains: "I look for the answer in the body - the collective, generational and personal memory stored in our nervous system - and how this affects human relationships, including those we have with ourselves. More specifically , I challenge exclusionary concepts of superiority that exist as embodied dominance within myself and other white people.”
In this way, "Memory Body" invites participants into a reflective search that engages with the tangible and intangible legacies embedded in our shared human experience. With this exhibition, SomoS reaffirms its commitment to fostering dialogues that challenge , healing and inspiring, reflecting the deep search for connection in an increasingly fragmented world.
