Imagine finding yourself in a red bar. Atmospheric music surrounds you, a drink is placed in your hand. Someone leads you to an old cabinet. Inside: a hidden door.
Beyond it begins a journey into the foundations of the city. Deep into the minds of artists who guide you through a dark labyrinth.

Berlin was once a promise that smelled of old industrial buildings, basements and dark machine halls. HIMMEL UNTER BERLIN takes place inside a nervous system — a network of underground vaults stretching across several buildings, as if the city had become tangled beneath the ground.

A dark network where old motors were once wound. Copper wire, wrapped thousands of times around iron until it became something that could spin loudly and at incredible speed. Motors built for cement works, steel rolling mills, waterworks pumps — machines designed to power other machines. Deep inside the catacombs of this former motor factory, a new HIMMEL UNTER BERLIN emerges.

For a limited time, international light and sound artists transform these vaults.
The artworks explore the uncomfortable questions of our time: humans in cryogenic chambers, AI clones of yourself created live before your eyes, windows into the future. Works that blink, breathe and release smoke. And around the next corner, you might find yourself standing inside a chamber of stars — or surrounded by machines performing a concert just for you.

Anyone who makes their way through this dark maze enters a place that was never meant for outside eyes. There were never many people here. This was a space known only to the workers who wound the motors. A few dozen people over a hundred years — no more.

HIMMEL UNTER BERLIN is somewhere between an exhibition and an underground gathering, reminiscent of Berlin in the 1990s. Raw, cold, improvised. The beauty of the imperfect.

Deep inside these basements, you get the feeling that you are experiencing something that, officially, does not even exist.
