Szymon Mika (pronounced Shi-mon) is one of Poland’s most acclaimed jazz guitarists, winner of the 2026 Fryderyk Award (aka polish Grammy) for Jazz Album of the Year for his album Agma, and a 2026 Fryderyk Award nominee for Composer of the Year. He is the winner of First Prize at the Jarek Śmietana International Jazz Guitar Competition (2015), the Grand Prix – Jazz Individuality at the Jazz nad Odrą Festival (2012), and numerous other awards and distinctions. He was named Hope of the Year 2016 and Guitarist of the Year 2022 in the readers’ and critics’ polls of Jazz Forummagazine. His playing is distinguished by its maturity, refined sound, and exceptional technical command.
In 2016, Mika graduated with distinction from the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, before continuing his studies at Jazzcampus Basel. In 2017–2018, he participated in the prestigious Swiss Focusyear program, performing alongside artists including Dave Holland, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Joshua Redman, Avishai Cohen, and many others.
Mika regularly performs with leading European musicians, collaborating on distinctive and innovative projects.
His playing has received enthusiastic praise from renowned artists such as Peter Bernstein, Mike Stern, and John Abercrombie. He has performed at numerous major jazz festivals in Poland and internationally.
As a composer, Mika has contributed original music to 12 albums, including two releases with his own trio, Unseen and Togetherness, featuring Ziv Ravitz and Max Mucha. In 2025, he released Agma, recorded with an international ensemble featuring Song Yi Jeon (South Korea) on vocals, Oskar Török (Slovakia) on trumpet, Andrzej Święs (Poland) on double bass, and Péter Somos (Hungary) on drums. Bringing together artists from different cultural and musical backgrounds, the project has received widespread critical acclaim internationally.
In addition, Mika has appeared as a session musician on more than 20 albums and composes and performs music for film.
