The works in the exhibition take landscape as their starting point – not merely as a subject, but as a space of emotion and experience. Visual artist Tiina Herttua’s practice draws on art history, the long tradition of landscape painting, and the concept of the sublime. For Herttua, the sublime is the sense of profound impact and intense experience encountered in the presence of a landscape. Her works emerge from memories and the observation of place, particularly the Finnish archipelago, the natural environment of Sipoonkorpi National Park, and the light of Sicily. Many of the paintings have been created en plein air.
In the Landscape Variations series, Herttua explores landscape by abstracting and simplifying its forms. A place may be distilled in a painting to little more than a colour, a quality of light, or a single detail that carries the experience of the landscape as a whole.
The exhibition also includes a series of works made using natural dyes. This choice of materials is a conscious statement on the growing distance between people and the natural world. In these works, Herttua adapts a traditional textile-dyeing method to the context of contemporary visual art. She produces pigments and dyes from materials gathered in the surrounding environment, including fallen branches, wild mushrooms and withering vegetation. The materials originate from the same environment as the works themselves, establishing a tangible connection between the works and the places in which they are created. Landscape is therefore not only the visual starting point of the works, but becomes part of their material essence.
Tiina Herttua is a visual artist who studied at the Lahti Institute of Fine Arts in Finland and at the Australian National University (ANU). She is a member of the Finnish Painters’ Union. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, as well as in Australia, Japan and the United States. Her works are held in private and public collections, including the collection of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. Herttua lives and works in Finland and Sicily.
