The Many Faces of Jazz Two Perspectives across the Decades Fotografien von Patrick Hinely und Detlev Schilke Parallel zum 53. Jazzfest Berlin zeigen der Berliner Fotograf Detlev Schilke und sein amerikanischer Kollege Patrick Hinely in der Fotogalerie Friedrichshain einen einzigartigen Querschnitt aus über 25 Jahren Jazzportraits vor und hinter den Kulissen. Die beiden Fotografen arbeiten seit dem Jazzfest Berlin 1989 Schulter an Schulter und lernten sich kennen, indem sie bei Sound-Checks konstant dem Anderen ins Bild liefen. Die symbolische Ost-West Freundschaft begann, als sie nach einem Konzert im legendären Franz Club in Prenzlauer Berg gemeinsam in Schilkes Trabbi durch das gerade geöffnete Brandenburger Tor fuhren. Sie teilen die Liebe zum Jazz und den gleichen fotografischen Ansatz. In vollformatigen Bildern, konsequent analog und schwarz-weiß, fingen sie die besondere Atmosphäre der zahlreichen Konzerte und Festivals über die Jahrzehnte ein.

Corresponding with the 53rd Jazzfest Berlin, the Fotogalerie Friedrichshain is pleased to host the joint exhibition of Berlin photographer Detlev Schilke and his American colleague and friend, Patrick Hinely. Their collective work not only offers an important photographic review and documentation of 25 years of jazz portraiture – both from behind and in front of the scene, but also is emblematic of the East-West friendship occurring with the advent of the Wall falling in 1989. Ever since then, the two photographers have been working shoulder to shoulder, especially for the JazzFest Berlin. However, their friendship grew driving together in Schilke's Trabbi through the recently opened Brandenburg Gate to Prenzlauer Berg to go to the legendary Franz Club. The 53 photographs in the exhibition powerfully capture the very special atmosphere of concerts, festivals and most certainly the musicians themselves over the last quarter century.
