The Art of Listening

The Art of Listening is an experimental workshop series aimed at developing “experiential listening”. Unlike traditional lectures which focus on the history of the field or the techniques used by composers and artists, the focus is rather on the experience of listening itself, thus facilitating an alternative way of connecting to music.

This first meeting will focus on the piece GESANG DER JÜNGLINGE by Karlheinz Stockhausen as an introduction to the approach. Beginning in familiar territories, we will listen to a short piano piece by Jean-Philippe Rameau and record our impressions in writing or drawing and thus become aware of what it is that we are listening to: material, mood, form, narrative, etc. We will then shift our awareness inwards and introspect on what is happening within us when we listen to such music. Moving to foreign territories, we will listen to the first two structures from Gesang der Jünglinge and conduct the same experiment. We will ask ourselves how is this music different and how are we different when we listen to it. We will continue shifting our attention back and forth between the music itself and our inner experience as we listen to it. In the process we will gradually discover the language of electronic music as well as a new way of listening.

The workshop is aimed at music aficionados, amateur and professional musicians alike and aims to open a door for experimental music to a non-academic audience. Facilitated by Omer Eilam on behalf of lev Berlin, a collective of musicians organizing projects of electronic music education for the general public.
